It has been 4 years since Bradford Shellhammer joined Nishith Shah and me in starting fabulis, and nearly 3 years since we pivoted from fabulis to Fab, and a little more than 2 years since we launched Fab as the place for Everyday Design. During that time we’ve grown a business that has brightened millions of peoples’ lives with design. It has been exhilarating. It has been rewarding. It has been challenging. And, it has been great fun.
The idea behind Fab was born over a dinner that Bradford and I had in February 2011. We were debating that night how best to refocus the business, and I looked across the table at my best friend of 12 years and said, “Let’s build a business that brings your passion for quirk, color, and modern living to the rest of the world.” And, as they say, the rest is history.
As we’ve done it, we’ve built an incredible team of people who collectively form the soul of Fab. Bradford’s passion, taste, laughter, and wit has had a profound influence on each and every one of us.
Along the way Bradford and I had the privilege of traveling the world together. He was best man at my wedding. I was best man at his wedding. We laughed. We cried. We smiled. We are family.
All businesses go through evolutions and different phases, and Fab is no exception. What once was a flash sales website is now the Everyday Design store. What once was a start-up formed around a kitchen table is now an established business. What once was an idea on a napkin is now a brand.
Bradford feels now is the perfect time in Fab’s lifecycle and for his career for him to take a step back from Fab and pursue other adventures. While we will miss having him as part of our everyday life here, we mostly feel an overwhelming sense of gratefulness for his huge contribution to Fab. Even now, as he embarks on new adventures (which we’ll all be following on Instagram @youngbradford), we are all fortunate that he will remain an Advisor.
Roles and people change. Business models evolve. But our motivation at Fab stays constant: to brighten peoples’ lives with design. Bradford helped ensure that was the cornerstone of our mission at Fab. It is forever embedded in our DNA and we aim to honor Bradford daily by fulfilling that mission.
To my friend and co-founder: I love you.
Thank you for just being you.
We’re all just lucky to have been touched by your magic.
Smile, you’re designed to.
